Objectives: With the increasing use of GLP-1 receptor agonists (such as Ozempic and Wegovy) for weight loss, the “Ozempic Face” phenomenon has emerged as a growing concern in aesthetic dermatology. This presentation aims to analyze the causes, mechanisms, and clinical presentation of this condition and explore dermatological strategies to manage and prevent facial volume loss associated with rapid weight reduction
Introduction: The “Ozempic Face” phenomenon has emerged as a growing concern in aesthetic dermatology, closely linked to the increasing popularity of GLP-1 receptor agonists such as Ozempic and Wegovy for weight loss. First highlighted in popular media, the term refers to the facial volume loss and accelerated aging appearance observed in individuals undergoing rapid weight reduction with these blockbuster drugs.
Materials / method: A retrospective observational analysis was conducted on patients undergoing GLP-1-induced weight loss who sought dermatological consultation for facial volume loss. Clinical data were collected on:
Rate of weight loss and its correlation with the severity of facial aging.
Skin elasticity and volume loss assessment using standardized dermatological grading scales.
Interventions performed, including dermal fillers, biostimulatory agents, fat grafting, and skin tightening procedures.
Patient satisfaction scores post-treatment.
Results: A direct correlation was observed between the speed of weight loss and the severity of Ozempic Face. Patients who lost weight too rapidly exhibited more significant fat atrophy and sagging.
Hyaluronic acid fillers and biostimulatory injectables (Sculptra, Radiesse) effectively restored volume with high patient satisfaction.
Skin tightening procedures (radiofrequency, ultrasound, and lasers) improved skin texture and elasticity.
Preventive strategies, such as slower weight loss approaches and early dermatological intervention, were recommended to minimize aesthetic side effects.
Conclusion: The Ozempic Face phenomenon represents a new challenge in aesthetic dermatology. Dermatologists should adopt a preventive and corrective approach, ensuring that weight loss occurs at a controlled pace to minimize excessive facial volume depletion. Multimodal interventions, including injectable fillers, energy-based treatments, and fat grafting, provide effective solutions to restore facial harmony. As the demand for GLP-1-based weight loss treatments continues to rise, dermatologists must be prepared to manage the aesthetic implications while guiding patients through a healthy and sustainable
